ProPix Group Shoots
We are launching a new series of group shoots to compliment what we teach in our ProPix Workshops. The aim of ProPix Group Shoots will be to present participants with a photo opportunity to put to work the knowledge acquired on our workshops.
When starting out, setting up model shoots on your own can be intimidating and you may feel you don’t have the confidence for it. Or you may be comfortable setting up model shoots, but find it hard getting the quality of models you want to shoot, without having shot great models first (bit like chicken and egg scenario isn’t it?) Or perhaps you have the experience, but its just too expensive or time consuming setting up shoots on your own. ProPix Group Shoots will provide everything you need for a model shoot, allowing you to concentrate on the fun stuff-experimenting with lighting and your own ideas.
Please note in order to participate in the Group Shoots you will be expected to have a basic knowledge of using a camera. There will be no formal teaching on the ProPix Group Shoots (although you are welcome to ask questions!) Experienced model(s) and lighting gear will all be provided-all you need to bring is your camera.
The first ProPix Group Shoot will be taking place in Sydney on the 19th March 2011. Tickets cost $30 per photographer, limited to 8 places. The shoot will run for 4 hours.
If you would like to attend please email us for full details. Spaces go on a first come basis so get in quick!
Melbourne December Workshops- Wrap Up
Our final workshops of 2010, held in Melbourne at the beginning of December are done and dusted, and were a huge success! Thank you to everyone who came along for the ride. Here are a few highlights:
First up we had Anna shooting at the wonderful Aperture Studios . The shot above was lit by a 180 x 120cm softbox, above camera left, and feathering out over the subject. Quick and easy!
We changed up Anna into more of a Geisha style and finished up shooting some edgy hard light against the studio wall. This one was just one strobe with reflector on, on a boom directly above the camera.
We also had John in the studio briefly so we did a few edgy shots using 2 bare flash’s, one on either side in close.
Next we headed to the local park for our Strobist Masterclass. This one was shot with one 580EX camera left, set to high speed sync (at about 1/2500th), allowing us to open up our aperture and achieve a shallow depth of field and lush bokeh.
We also shot some natural light with reflectors. Quick and easy beautiful light.
You can check out a short behind the scenes video below:

The workshop participants have been enthusiastically adding their images to our Flickr group which you can see here. They are looking fantastic!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from ProPix!

September Gold Coast Workshop Wrap Up
Another Pro Pix Workshop is done and dusted! Thanks to everyone who came to our workshops on the Gold Coast over the weekend. And a huge shout out to Chelsea and Dan our amazing models- you guys killed it! We had an awesome time and cant believe it was over so quickly. If you missed out don’t worry, we will be returning to the Gold Coast for more workshops early 2011.
Here are a few of our favourite set ups from the weekend:

Day 1: Derek got this awesome capture of Chelsea by the waters edge. As the ambient light dropped to reveal a stunning sunset, we lit Chelsea with a medium softbox camera left.
Day 2: We got Dan to strike a pose on the sand and shot a few edgy fashion frames. We were shooting in harsh sunlight but wanted to cut the depth of field right down giving us a clean background…enter high speed sync. Shot 50mm at f2, lit up Dan with a single 580 EXII at camera left. Filled in some shadow with a silver reflector camera right. Beautiful backlighting thanks to the sun. Taken into Aperture 3 for black and white conversion.
We wil be announcing the next Australian workshop shortly so watch this space!

Inspiration
Now that we have a fresh new website for Pro Pix Workshops, we are going to start adding some posts on the subjects we cover in our workshops, such as technique, gear and inspiration. The first topic is about inspiration…
As creative people inspiration is something we all need. Sometimes however, you just cant find it. I like to keep a constant digital scrap book filled with ideas, images, words etc that im constantly adding to, which I find helps my inspiration from drying up.
Last week I happened to see a post over on Nick Onken’s blog about his personal approach to this. He utilises a stunningly simple tumblr template to archive his own inspiration scrapbook online. With the rise in popularity of iPhones and even iPads this means you can feasibly carry your inspiration wherever you go! You can add to it on the move, show your ideas to your clients and team over a coffee, all on a gorgeous looking format.
I highly recommend you sign up for a tumblr account and use this template to create a personal scrapbook- its just such a beautiful way of showing people your ideas!
